the gods viii by Donald Kuspit

the gods remain good,

                                   wisdom pouring forth

from their tears,

their eyes once again all seeing,

replenished by innocence.

      purged of the world

their plentitude becomes evident

    in their silence.

let the myth of them remain

                                            when all is finished,

so the sky can be burnished

                                            by their presence,

that my eyes have a resting place

                                                     of wonder,

untouched by the indifference

                                                of death.

no shadows to fear

                              when their light comes unbidden,

a thread of light

leading me out of the labyrinth

of longing

into the pastoral space of myth,

with its miracles

  of memory.
